Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: Avatar of Lord Krishna
Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: Avatar
of Lord Krishna
The story begins with a
powerful scene set on the 18th day of the Mahabharata War. Lord Krishna has a
fateful conversation with Ashwatthama, the son of Guru Dronacharya, played by
Amitabh Bachchan. Krishna tells Ashwatthama that while his own end is near,
Ashwatthama's sin will prolong his existence until Krishna's rebirth as Kalki
in the Kaliyuga. Angered by Ashwatthama's act of destroying the unborn child in
the Pandava family, Krishna curses him to live on and states that Ashwatthama
can only be freed from this curse by saving Krishna when he is reborn.
In a dystopian future,
Yashkin, portrayed by Kamal Haasan, has lived for years after centuries of
running. He has enslaved people and built the last city on Earth in Kashi.
Prabhas enters this city as a bounty hunter, where a rule dictates that
acquiring one million units allows access to the complex where Yashkin resides.
Prabhas competes fiercely in this harsh environment, while Yashkin pursues a
sinister plan involving extracting a serum from the embryos of several women.
During this time,
Deepika Padukone's character develops a child in her womb, and it is discovered
that this child is Krishna reincarnated. Amitabh Bachchan's Ashwatthama,
burdened by his centuries-long curse, seeks out Deepika upon learning of her
significance. The story unfolds with Prabhas aiding Deepika and Ashwatthama in
their quest, while Yashkin's relentless pursuit of his goal adds to the tension
and drama.
Director Nag Ashwin
deserves commendation for his ambitious project, merging the ancient mythology
of the Mahabharata with modern technology and a grand narrative vision. The
film's impressive graphics rival those of major international films, and the
intricate world Yashkin inhabits is depicted with grandeur. Highlights include
a massive figure used as an elevator, the creepy transformation into a gorilla
robot during the climax, and the thrill of chasing in the second half.
Despite its grandeur,
the film's first half tests the audience's patience. Prabhas's character
initially seems comedic but gradually evolves into a more significant role.
Kamal Haasan's character seems slighter. The cinematography is top-notch, and
while Santhosh Narayanan's songs overhang his background score is superb. The
VFX scenes and the chase sequences in the second half, culminating in Prabhas's
character's revelation, are particularly noteworthy.

Laandhar Movie Review: Whodunit
Laandhar Movie Review: Whodunit
"Laandhar,"
directed by Shaji Saleem and starring Vidharth, begins as a gripping thriller.
Vidharth takes on the role of Arvind, an honest Assistant Commissioner of
Police in Coimbatore. The film opens with a series of intense events as a
psycho killer, clad in a black raincoat, wreaks havoc in the city. The tension
escalates when police officers are injured trying to apprehend him, and a
suspect mistakenly killed by the police turns out to be innocent. The
investigation then leads the police to Pattukottai, setting up a suspenseful
quest to capture the real murderer.
The
first half of "Laandhar " is characterized by its fast-paced
narrative, which keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The screenplay moves
swiftly from one scene to the next, creating a sense of urgency and
anticipation. Each moment is filled with suspense, making the audience eager to
see what happens next. However, the film's dynamic pace and gripping storyline
are confined to the first half, building expectations for the second half.
Post-intermission,
the film's momentum slows down significantly. The identity of the killer is
revealed early in the second half, which diminishes the suspense that had been
meticulously built up. The storyline then unfolds in a predictable manner,
lacking the surprising twists that one might expect from a thriller. Flashback
scenes in this part of the film also feel redundant, reminiscent of many other
films in the genre.
Despite
the narrative issues in the latter half, "Laandhar " has notable
strengths in its technical aspects. Gnanasowndar’s cinematography is excellent,
capturing the tense atmosphere and enhancing the overall visual appeal of the
film. Praveen's music score complements the cinematography, adding a compelling
layer to the viewing experience. These elements help to maintain a certain
level of engagement even when the storyline falters.
In
terms of performances, Vidharth delivers a strong portrayal of Arvind,
convincingly embodying both a determined police officer and a loving husband.
Among the supporting cast, Sahana stands out with her portrayal of Manju. She
effectively conveys a range of emotions, from love to stress and anger, adding
depth to her character. While the film's second half may not live up to the
promise of its first, the strong performances and technical excellence make
"Laandhar " an overall worthwhile watch.
Bayamariya Brammai Movie Review: Daring decorative
Bayamariya Brammai Movie Review: Daring decorative
"Bayamariya
Brammai" tells the story of Jagadish, a convicted murderer, through the
eyes of multiple actors, each portraying different stages of his life. This
narrative approach explores how a book about Jagadish's life could
significantly impact its readers. The ensemble cast, including JD, Guru
Somasundaram, Harish Uthman, Sai Priyanka Ruth, Harish Raju, and Jack Robin,
each brings their own perspective to the character, attempting to showcase the
complexities and transformations Jagadish undergoes over time. Despite their
efforts, the film's convoluted narrative and lack of coherent storytelling fail
to engage the audience.
Supporting
roles include John Vijay and AK as Maran, Vinod Sagar as writer Kapilan, and
Divya Ganesh as Jagadish's wife. While these actors contribute to the film,
their characters appear underdeveloped, and their performances do not
significantly enhance the overall narrative. The ensemble cast listens to the
director's vision but struggles to bring depth to their roles, leaving the
audience disconnected from the story.
The
cinematography by Pravin and Nanda, along with K's music, adds visual and
auditory appeal to the film. These technical elements provide some redeeming
qualities, offering moments of aesthetic enjoyment. However, despite these
strengths, the film's overall execution falls short, as the narrative's
complexity overshadows its artistic merits.
Directed
by Rahul Kabali, the film attempts to present murder as an art form, aiming for
a unique storytelling method. Unfortunately, this approach results in a
confusing and disengaging experience for viewers. The director's failure to
effectively convey the transformative power of books diminishes the potential
impact of the story. Instead of bringing Jagadish's character closer to the
audience, the film distances viewers with its unclear and disjointed narrative.
In
conclusion, "Bayamariya Brammai" does not achieve its ambitious
goals. Despite a talented cast and technical strengths, the film's inability to
clearly convey its message about the power of books results in a disconnected
and unengaging viewing experience. The narrative's complexity and lack of
coherence prevent the film from resonating with its audience, leaving its
intended impact unrealized.

Rail Movie Review:
Rail Movie Review:
The
film tells the story of Kungumaraj, an electrician from a village, and his wife
Vairamala. Kungumaraj struggles with a severe alcohol addiction, which causes
him to neglect his work and disrupt his life. This addiction leads to frequent
arguments with Vairamala, creating tension in their marriage. Their situation
is further complicated by the fact that they have been childless for seven
years, resulting in a lack of respect from their relatives and villagers.
Kungumaraj's
frustration over his personal failures and the scorn from his community leads
him to take out his anger on Sunil (Parvez Mehru), a young man from a northern
state living across from their house. Despite Kungumaraj's hostility, Vairamala
treats Sunil kindly, seeing him as a younger brother. This dynamic sets the
stage for the unfolding drama.
The
plot intensifies when Sunil, preparing to return to his hometown, entrusts
Vairamala with a bag. Before he can come back for it,Sunil tragically dies. His
death brings his wife Dimple, child, and father to town for his funeral. During
the mourning period, Sunil’s family starts inquiring about the money he had,
prompting Kungumaraj to recall the bag Sunil gave to Vairamala.
Kungumaraj,
in a state of urgency, goes to retrieve the bag from Vairamala, only to
discover that it is missing. This incident adds another layer of tension and
guilt, particularly for Vairamala. The film then delves into the mystery of the
missing bag and explores how Vairamala copes with the situation and what
actions she takes to support Parvez's bereaved family.
The
performances of Kungumaraj and Vairamala stand out for their authenticity,
making it hard to believe that this is their first film. Kungumaraj effectively
conveys his character's sense of helplessness and frustration. Meanwhile,
Vairamala's portrayal, especially her reaction to the loss of the bag and her
guilt, earns significant praise.
Supporting
actors, including Parvez Mehru as the northern youth, Ramesh Vaidya as
Kungumaraj's friend, Senthil Kochadai as Vairamala's father, and Bindu as
Parvez's father, all deliver performances that add depth to the story. Their
roles are well-cast and enhance the narrative.
The
cinematography by Theni Iswar captures the essence of the film's setting,
bringing the story's environment to life. SJ Janani's music complements the
scenes, maintaining the natural and authentic feel of the film. These technical
elements contribute significantly to the overall impact of the movie.
Director
Bhaskar Shakti deserves credit for his realistic portrayal of the lives of
common people, particularly those seeking livelihood in Tamil Nadu from other
states. The film not only tells a compelling story but also addresses broader
social issues, such as the prejudice against northern workers and the impact of
alcoholism on Tamil Nadu's youth. Shakti's direction emphasizes the resilience
and independence necessary to survive and thrive in any environment.
