Raghu
Thatha Movie Review:
Raghu
Tatha is Suman Kumar's directorial debut. He has also written the screenplay
for the film. It is the first Tamil production of Vijay Kiragandur's Hombale
Films. Keerthy's "Raghu Tatha" will be released in theatres on
August 15, 2024, India's Independence Day.
The
film is set in the 1970s, the story revolves around Kayalvizhi, a determined woman
from the village of Valluvanpet. Portrayed by Keerthi Suresh, Kayalvizhi earns
the respect of her community for her fearless opposition to the imposition of
Hindi, a battle she began as a student. Her activism reaches a peak when she
successfully prevents the establishment of a Hindi Prachar Sabha in her
village. Alongside her public efforts, she writes under the pen name Pandian,
gaining a following for her insightful and powerful writings.
Engineer
Tamilselvan, played by Ravindra Vijay, is a devoted admirer of Pandian's work,
unaware that Kayalvizhi is the author. Despite her accomplishments, Kayalvizhi
faces pressure from her family to marry. Initially resistant to the idea, she
is eventually swayed when she learns that her beloved grandfather, played by
M.S. Bhaskar, is terminally ill with cancer. Moved by her grandfather’s
condition and his wish to see her settled, Kayalvizhi reluctantly agrees to the
marriage with Tamilselvan, finding solace in his appreciation of her writing.
As
the wedding approaches, Kayalvizhi discovers a significant truth that alters
her perspective. This revelation leads her to a profound decision: despite her
longstanding opposition to Hindi, she chooses to learn the language and take
the exam. This decision symbolizes a complex evolution in her character,
reflecting both personal growth and a strategic adaptation to the
socio-political environment she once fought against.
Director
Suman Kumar delivers a compelling narrative in his debut film, balancing the
themes of women's empowerment and the anti-Hindi imposition struggle without
resorting to heavy-handed preaching. The film's pacing allows the story to
unfold naturally, engaging the audience with its depth and authenticity. Suman
Kumar's choice of actors proves spot-on, with Keerthy Suresh embodying the
protagonist's resilience and determination, and Ravindra Vijay providing a
nuanced portrayal of Tamilselvan.
The
supporting cast, including M.S. Bhaskar and Devadarshini, adds richness to the
narrative with their heartfelt performances. The film's success lies in its
ability to convey powerful messages subtly, a feat made possible by the skilled
direction and Shawn Roldan's evocative music. Together, these elements create a
film that resonates with audiences, leaving a lasting impression.
