Review: A Gripping Tale of Power and Ambition
Directed by Jayavel Murugan and produced
by Karthik Sreedharan under the Yakkai Films banner, Varunan – God of Water is
an intense action drama set against the backdrop of Royapuram. The film
explores the rivalry between Ayyavu (Radha Ravi), a successful water plant
owner, and John (Charanraj), a competitor whose business depends on Ayyavu’s
refills. Although they have an agreement dividing their respective supply
areas, their uneasy truce is disrupted by ambitious individuals seeking control
over the water business. Running for approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, the
film delves into the ensuing conflicts, portraying the harsh realities of
resource exploitation and power struggles.
Co-produced by Van Productions, Varunan –
God of Water features a stellar ensemble cast, including Dushyant Jayaprakash,
Gabriella, Shankar Nag Vijayan, Haripriya, and Maheshwari. Complementing the
performances is a skilled technical team, with cinematographer Sri Rama
Santhosh capturing the visual essence, music composer Bobo Sasi setting the
tone, and editor U. Muthhaiyan ensuring a crisp narrative. The film’s tagline, Neerintri
Aamayadu Ulaku, reinforces its central theme, emphasizing the indispensable nature
of water.
A grand preview event in Chennai saw the
presence of notable figures such as producer Anbuchezhiyan, director Sathya

had penned three songs in collaboration with composer Bobo Sasi. He personally
performed Kolaaru, a song centered on a gangster, and teased a five-minute
single-shot scene that is expected to be a visual highlight. Actor Shankar Nag
Vijayan spoke about his long-standing association with director Jayavel Murugan
and praised the film’s high-energy action sequences, especially the climactic fight
scene, which he credited to the stunt team’s expertise.
