Sumo Movie Review:
Sumo, directed by S. P. Hosimin, is a
refreshing blend of sports, comedy, and drama that brings an unusual yet
heartwarming story to Tamil cinema. The screenplay is penned by Shiva, while
the original story is crafted by Hosimin. Produced by Ishari K. Ganesh under
the banner of Vels Film International, Sumo hit the big screens on 25 April
2025. With stunning visuals captured by acclaimed cinematographer Rajiv Menon
and sharp editing by Praveen K. L., the film promises a wholesome cinematic
experience. The music is composed by Nivas K. Prasanna, whose lively score
complements the film’s tone perfectly.
The story revolves around Shiva (played by
Shiva), who works at a restaurant owned by VTV Ganesh. Apart from his job,
Shiva harbors a passion for surfing. His life takes an unexpected turn when he
falls in love with Priya Anand's character, adding a romantic flavor to the
narrative. One day, after a fierce tide, Shiva discovers a giant figure washed
ashore. To his astonishment, the figure is alive, and he quickly administers
first aid to save him.
It is soon revealed that the mysterious
giant is a sumo wrestler, portrayed by real-life sumo artist Yoshinori Tashiro.
Determined to help his new friend, Shiva embarks on a mission to send the
wrestler back to Japan and support him in achieving his dream of winning a
major sumo tournament. The camaraderie between Shiva and Tashiro forms the
emotional core of the film, delivering both humor and heartfelt moments.
Shiva impresses once again with his
effortless comic timing and endearing screen presence. Priya Anand brings
warmth and charm to her role, offering a delightful romantic counterpart to
Shiva. Yoshinori Tashiro, making a memorable debut in Tamil cinema, lends
authenticity and heart to his character, making the audience root for him. VTV
Ganesh provides solid support with his natural flair for humor. Among the
technicians, Rajiv Menon's cinematography beautifully captures the coastal
settings and surf sequences, while Praveen K. L.'s crisp editing keeps the
narrative pace engaging. Nivas K. Prasanna’s music stands out, especially in
the emotional and uplifting moments.
Sumo successfully blends an unusual
premise with strong performances and technical finesse. Director S. P. Hosimin
ensures the film remains light-hearted yet emotionally resonant. With its
unique storyline, spirited performances, and impressive technical execution, Sumo
is a feel-good entertainer that leaves the audience with a smile. It is a
commendable effort from the entire team and a refreshing addition to Tamil
cinema.
