Overview
Retro (subtitled Love-Laughter-War) is a
stirring period drama from acclaimed director Karthik Subbaraj, known for his
genre-bending narratives and stylized visual storytelling. Backed by Stone
Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment, this film revisits a meticulously
designed vintage era, blending romance, comedy, and psychological complexity
into a compelling cinematic experience. Aided by Santhosh Narayanan’s evocative
score, Retro emerges as both a love & emotional survival.
Plot & Themes
At its center is Paarivel, played by Suriya,
in a deeply introspective and emotionally rich performance. Raised by the wife
of a corrupt man (Joseph George) but never fully accepted by his adoptive
father, Paarivel carries a lifelong burden of emotional displacement. Despite
rejection, he defends his father’s illicit dealings, highlighting his inner
conflict and need for validation.
His connection with childhood friend Rukumani (Pooja Hegde) matures into charged romance, casting Paarivel as a modern Krishna figure. Opposing forces, particularly Nassar’s antagonistic role, mirror mythic archetypes such as Kamsa, adding symbolic resonance to the narrative.
Performances
- Suriya
delivers one of his most commanding performances, navigating themes of
love, loyalty, trauma, and redemption with skillful nuance.
- Pooja
Hegde shines as Rukumani, capturing her as a woman disillusioned by love.
- Jayaram,
though charismatic as Dr. Chaplin Lolly, inspired sidekick, is
underserved by a script that doesn’t fully leverage his comic timing or
emotional depth.
- Joseph
George, Nassar, and Prakash Raj provide gravitas in supporting roles,
rounding out a formidable cast.
Technical Brilliance
- Production
Design: Impeccable set work and era-authentic details immerse viewers in
the film’s historical milieu.
- Cinematography
& Costumes: Rich, textured visuals and carefully curated attire
enhance narrative believability.
- Music:
Santhosh Narayanan’s retro-modern soundtrack is the soul of Retro, with
reimagined classics that are both nostalgic and innovative.
Conclusion
Retro is a masterfully layered film that
transcends its genre trappings to offer a moving story of identity, emotional
wounds, and the redemptive power of love. With Retro, Suriya marks a triumphant
return post- Kanguva,
while Karthik Subbaraj once again affirms his place as one of Indian cinema’s
most daring contemporary auteurs.
