Thodarum Movie Review: A
Heartfelt Journey Through Life and Legacy
Directed
by Tharun Moorthy and produced by M. Renjith under the banner of Rejaputhra
Visual Media, this emotionally layered film was released in Tamil Nadu on May 9th,
2025, and runs for approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The movie gently
unfolds a story rooted in everyday struggles, anchored by powerful performances
and an emotionally resonant narrative. It’s not a film that depends on dramatic
twists, but rather on its simplicity and sincerity.
Mohanlal
plays the central role of a former stunt actor from Chennai whose career was
abruptly halted after a severe accident. Now living in Theni, he works as a
taxi driver and leads a quiet, content life with his wife, daughter, and son.
His most treasured possession is his old Ambassador car, a vehicle that
represents both his past glories and his present stability. The emotional
connection he shares with the car is at the heart of the story.
The plot
begins to shift when Mohanlal returns home from a short trip, only to discover
that his beloved car has been seized by the police and impounded at the
station. While a stern sub-inspector refuses to release it, a more empathetic
police inspector steps in to return the vehicle, but not without a condition.
Mohanlal is asked to accompany the inspector and two policemen on an urgent
night journey, setting the stage for what follows.
What
starts as a routine drive evolves into a deeply transformative journey for
Mohanlal. Although the storyline might seem predictable at times, the
screenplay draws the audience in with its emotional depth and relatable
characters. The film blends sentiment, nostalgia, and realism with finesse,
making the audience feel like a companion in the protagonist’s quiet struggle
and self-discovery.
Mohanlal
delivers a heartfelt performance, expressing inner conflict and dignity with
remarkable ease. Shobana portrays his wife with grace and subtle strength,
while the supporting cast—including Maniyanpilla Raju, Irshadh, Prakash Varma,
Binu Pappu, Farhan Fazil, Shaijo Adimali, Thomas Mathew, and the young
Amrithavarshini, add authenticity and warmth to the story. With a soul-stirring
score by Jakes Bejoy and grounded storytelling by Tharun Moorthy, the film
becomes a poignant reminder of life’s quieter but profound moments. It’s a
cinematic journey worth taking.
