Trending Movie Review: A Dark Glimpse into the Social Media Generation

Trending is a thought-provoking social drama that delves into the evolving lifestyles of the younger generation, particularly those born in the 2000s and Gen Z. With the rise of social media, everyone, from teenagers to elderly women, has found new avenues to earn fame and money. However, the film takes a sharp turn to highlight how these platforms are often misused, exposing the darker undercurrents of online life.

The story revolves around Arjun and Meera, a couple who ride high on YouTube success until their channel collapses, leading them into financial distress. In their desperation, they receive a mysterious call from someone known only as "Mask," who invites them to participate in a secretive, high-stakes game show that promises a financial comeback. But this is not just a game for money, it becomes a brutal test of trust, love, and personal boundaries. The emotional manipulation they endure slowly unveils long-buried secrets, threatening the very core of their relationship.

Director and writer Sivaraj N deserves credit for exploring a narrative that transitions from online stardom to the sinister world of gamified exploitation. His attempt to portray the consequences of digital obsession and emotional vulnerability strikes a chord, even though some scenes could have benefited from tighter execution. The concept of a masked figure assigning emotionally charged tasks adds a psychological thriller element, reminiscent of reality TV but with a much darker twist. The "off-camera" surveillance angle cleverly critiques how society now thrives on voyeurism and judgment.

Kalaiyarasan delivers a mature and emotionally layered performance as Arjun, portraying both vulnerability and suppressed rage with finesse. Priyalaya as Meera is equally compelling, showing inner strength and heartbreak in equal measure. Vidhya Borgia and Basanth Nagar Ravi lend strong support, while the ensemble cast contributes meaningfully to the tension. The chemistry between the lead pair keeps the audience invested throughout the emotional rollercoaster.

Technically, Trending is elevated by Praveen Balu’s gripping cinematography, which captures both the allure and the claustrophobia of digital life. Editor Nagooran Ramachandran ensures a brisk pace, especially in the second half. Sam C.S.’s music underscores the film’s emotional highs and psychological dips with precision. Action choreographer Monster Mukesh brings realism to the intense sequences without overindulgence. Backed by Meenakshi Anand’s production, Trending offers a timely cautionary tale for today’s content creators and consumers alike.
