Tamil Movie Review: A Chilling Story Rooted in Dark Rituals
Granny is a Tamil horror–thriller film written and directed by Vijaya Kumaran, produced by T. Vijayamary under the banner of Vijay Mary Universal Media, and distributed by Hari Uthara Productions. The film brings a unique horror concept that blends village superstition, sorcery, and emotional family drama. The music, composed by Dr. Chelliah Pandian, supports the film's eerie mood. The story mainly revolves around a mysterious old woman and a series of disturbing child murders in a peaceful village.
The plot
begins with Ananthu Nag and Aparna, a couple who return from abroad with their
two children, played by Master Ghanshyam and Baby Sandrea. The children are
deaf and dumb, and the family decides to settle in a calm, nature-filled
village. They live in a beautifully designed wooden house built with unique
artistic craftsmanship, without using brick or stone. A shocking incident takes
place where a child’s heart is mysteriously removed from the body, creating
fear and confusion among the villagers and police.
The
investigation is handled by Dhileepan, who plays a sincere police officer,
along with Singam Puli in a supporting cop role. The police are puzzled, as the
crime does not look like an animal attack since only the heart is missing.
During this time, an elderly woman played by Vadivukkarasi comes to the village
and is given shelter by the couple. Though she appears harmless, the village
elders begin to suspect her strange behavior, adding tension and suspense to
the narrative.
As the
investigation progresses, shocking truths are revealed. The old woman is more
than 100 years old, and her husband was a powerful sorcerer who practiced dark
rituals to stay young. Years ago, villagers discovered that he was sacrificing
children by removing their hearts to regain youth and beauty. Enraged, the
villagers burned him alive, but he cruelly placed his wife in front of him
during the punishment. This traumatic event becomes the root of the present-day
horror.
Now, the
granny continues the dark ritual to regain her lost youth. She has already
taken one child’s heart and needs two more to complete the ritual. Her next
targets are the deaf and dumb children of Ananthu and Aparna. The film builds
suspense around whether the children survive and whether the granny succeeds in
her plan. Vadivukkarasi delivers a powerful and frightening performance,
carrying the film with her screen presence. Dhileepan performs convincingly as
an investigator, while the supporting cast plays their roles effectively. The
director succeeds in creating a creepy atmosphere with a strong concept, and
the technical team supports the story well through music, setting, and art
direction. Granny stands out as a horror film with an emotional core and a
village-based supernatural storyline.
