Kolai Seval Tamil Movie Review: A Hard-Hitting Rural Drama on Caste Reality

Kolai Seval is a rural-based film directed by V. R. Thudhivaanan and produced by R. P. Bala and Kousalya Bala under the banner RP Films. The film features Kalaiyarasan in the lead role as Kaali, while Deepa Balu plays his wife Anusuya. The movie is set in a village backdrop and focuses on the social issues that still exist in rural communities.

The first half of the film mainly shows the strong bond between Kaali and Anusuya. Their relationship is portrayed as loving and hopeful, as the couple dreams of building a happy life together. Anusuya is pregnant, and Kaali's family prepares to visit their family deity located deep inside a forest. Kaali’s family travels to the forest temple in a truck, while Kaali and Anusuya plan to follow them on a bike. They go to the temple with happiness and faith, hoping for a bright future. The peaceful journey, however, slowly turns into a tragic situation as unexpected events begin to unfold during their return.

The turning point of the story happens when Anusuya’s family members arrive at the forest. They are angry because she married Kaali, who belongs to a different caste. This leads to a shocking and brutal act that changes the lives of the couple forever. The film tries to highlight how caste-based hatred still exists in some parts of society, even in modern times.

Performance-wise, Kalaiyarasan delivers a strong and emotional performance as Kaali, portraying the pain and struggle of his character effectively. Deepa Balu gives a sincere performance as Anusuya, bringing depth to the emotional moments of the film. Bala Saravanan appears in a supporting role as Kumar, adding natural moments to the narrative. The music composed by Santhan supports the intense mood of the story.
