Dorothy Tamil Movie Review: A Story of Friendship, Identity and Acceptance

Dorothy is directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Guneet Monga Kapoor, Achin Jain, and Jyoti Deshpande. The film stars Sanath and Rishikanth in the lead roles, with Keerthy Suresh appearing in an important supporting role. Set in a village with strong traditional values, the film explores friendship, identity, love, and the way transgender people were treated during the 1990s and earlier periods.

The story revolves around two childhood friends, Karthik and Subbu, played by Rishikanth and Sanath. Karthik strongly believes that a man should always be bold and masculine and should not show feminine behaviour. Subbu, however, has a naturally innocent and feminine side, which he tries to hide from his family and society. Whenever Subbu shows this side of his personality, Karthik tells him not to behave like a woman and encourages him to be bold. At the same time, Karthik remains very close to Subbu and protects him as a friend. The film also shows how people who do not fit traditional social expectations are treated within families and society.

As they grow older, Karthik falls in love with a girl and looks forward to sharing his first kiss with her. However, an unexpected situation prevents it from happening, and the relationship eventually comes to an end. The girl later marries another man. After this, Subbu's elder brother brings a Malayali woman named Dorothy, played by Keerthy Suresh, into the family. Dorothy's arrival makes Subbu happy because she gives him care and affection. However, the relationship between Subbu and Dorothy is misunderstood by Dorothy's husband and father-in-law, leading to a tragic situation.

After this incident, Subbu becomes deeply disturbed and depressed. His changing appearance and behaviour create anger and confusion within his family. His father and elder brother eventually decide that Subbu should be killed, and they give this responsibility to Karthik. This becomes the central conflict of the film. Karthik is forced to face a difficult choice involving the childhood friend whom he has known, protected, and cared for since his younger days. The question of whether he can actually kill his closest friend keeps the emotional tension moving forward.

Sanath gives a strong performance as Subbu. He handles both sides of the character with confidence, the aggressive and masculine Subbu and the feminine side that emerges later. His body language, expressions, and emotional changes help the audience understand the character's inner struggle. Rishikanth also makes a strong impact as Karthik. His aggressive and strongly masculine nature is clearly shown, while his emotional change towards Subbu becomes an important part of his performance. His energy in the dance sequences also adds to his character.

Karthik Subbaraj handles the friendship and emotional conflict between the two characters with care. One of the interesting parts of the screenplay is the way Karthik's first-kiss experience connects emotionally with Subbu later in the story. What initially appears uncomfortable gradually develops into a deeper emotional understanding and romantic feeling. The change in Karthik's feelings is presented step by step rather than suddenly. Keerthy Suresh has limited screen time, but her character, Dorothy plays an important role in taking the story forward and creating a major turning point.

Ilaiyaraaja's music is another important part of the film. His songs and background score suit the traditional setting while also giving the film a fresh musical feel. Some of the music stays with the audience even after the scenes are over. The climax song creates a positive and feel-good mood. The final portions also create curiosity about Karthik's reaction when he sees Subbu after his transformation, from the childhood male friend he has always known to someone he begins to see differently.

Overall, Dorothy is a film about friendship, identity, love, social expectations, and acceptance. Through Karthik and Subbu's relationship, the film explores how people's understanding of masculinity and gender can change as they begin to understand another person's emotions. Sanath and Rishikanth carry the film's emotional core with committed performances, while Keerthy Suresh adds value as an important supporting character.
