Tamil Movie Review: When a Fearsome Don Finds an Unexpected Connection
Baththa,
directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, takes a different route with its central
character. Set in 1980s Madras, the film brings together a local don, a young
boy and an unexpected situation that changes the way the lead character looks
at his own life. Vijay Sethupathi plays the title role, with Lijomol Jose, Sai
Prithiv Raj, Sahasra, Arjun Chidambaram and others in supporting roles.
The film
introduces Baththa as a person who has earned a dreaded name in his locality.
But the story does not remain focused only on his image as a don. A completely
unexpected incident puts him in a difficult position, and this becomes the
starting point for a different kind of journey for the character.
An
eight-year-old boy becomes an important part of Baththa's life during this
unusual situation. Their relationship is not something Baththa would have
expected. As they spend time together, the tough man slowly begins to reveal a
more human side of himself.
This
change in Baththa is where the emotional side of the film comes in. A man who
is normally seen through fear and power is placed in a situation where he has
to deal with his own vulnerability. The film uses this relationship to bring
out the softer emotions behind the character.
Vijay
Sethupathi gives the lead character the required weight and emotional presence.
The role allows him to move between Baththa's tough personality and his more
vulnerable moments. Lijomol Jose as Kannima also adds to the emotional
portions, while Sai Prithiv Raj as Sabari and Sahasra as Thenmozhi contribute
to the family and relationship aspects.
Arjun
Chidambaram, Hari Krishnan, Santy Balachander, Vishnu Govind and Balamurugan
appear in supporting roles as Jothi, Thirunavukkarasu, Selvi, Dilli and Durai.
Their characters form part of the world surrounding Baththa and help carry the
story forward.
Director Balaji
Tharaneetharan has chosen an interesting setting for this character-driven
story. The 1980 Madras backdrop gives the film a period identity, while Sai
Abhyankkar's music adds to the film's dramatic and emotional space. The
production is by Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare, with Ashwin
Murugan as Co-Producer.
Overall, Baththa
is not presented simply as another gangster story. Its focus on the unexpected
relationship between a feared man and a young boy gives the film a different
emotional direction. The combination of Vijay Sethupathi's lead performance,
Balaji Tharaneetharan's storytelling and the period setting makes Baththa a
film built around character, emotion and an unusual human connection.
